Memorandum Presented to the Government of Austria
(Via the Consul General of India, Vancouver)
Re: Assassination of Sant Rama Nand Ji and Attempted Assassination of Sant Niranjan Dass Ji on May 24, 2009 in Vienna, Austria. |
The news of the assassination of Sant Rama Nand Ji and the attempted assassination of Sant Niranjan Dass on May 24 in Vienna, Austria, has left a shock wave among peace keepers globally. The attack on these preachers not only raises questions about the safety and security of all citizens but also is seen as an attack on the democracy – the principle values of liberty, fraternity, and brotherhood.
Sant Rama Nand Ji, renowned and respected preacher represented India’s more than ¼ of the population and he has a significant following outside of India. Sant Rama Nand Ji left a legacy in Canada and his messages of peace, universal brotherhood, and right to self-respect will be cherished by the present and the future generations.
Sant Rama Nand Ji believed strongly in self determination and he taught during his visits to Canada that we all have the right to worship the supreme power. Because of their wisdom, we regard Sant Rama Nand Ji and Sant Niranjan Dass Ji as our respected elders and we take pride in bowing before them and other respected elders or masters who teach the importance of peace and universal brotherhood. For the civilization to grow it is important that the fundamental principles of equality, liberty, fraternity be preserved; and, any differences in opinions be resolved through meaningful dialogues and discussions- not by violence.
From all reported news, it appears that both the Government of India and the Government of Austria have cooperated to the investigation in Austria. We appreciate this effort and encourage both governments to continue to collaborate so the offenders are tried in the courts of law and justice is granted in a timely manner.
Furthermore, we the undersigned representatives of Canadian organizations, further request the Government of Austria to:
- Conduct the investigation in a timely manner and ensure the offenders are duly arrested, tried, and if possible, extradited to India;
- Provide security and protection to Ravidassia organizations in Vienna so that there are no further incidents of such heinous violence or attacks on the humanity.
- Denounce practice or promotion of violence on grounds of religious beliefs.
- Take any other measures that preserve and promote peace among all.
Submitted respectfully to the Consul General of India (Vancouver) on the _____day of July 2009.

| SANT RAMA NAND JI WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED |
The stunning news of an unprovoked and armed assault on the lives of 108 Sant Niranjan Dass Ji, head of Dera Sachkhand Ballan, and his second in command, Sant Rama Nand Ji, sent waves of shock, distress and resentment among millions of followers of Shri Guru Ravidass Ji and Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji all over the world. The assault occurred while they were attending religious services on Sunday, May 24 th 2009 at Shri Guru Ravidass Gurudwara in Vienna, Austria and resulted in the death of 57 year old Sant Ramanand Ji, seriously wounded 68 year old Sant Niranjan Dass Ji and many other members of the congregation.
At a special prayer meeting held May 25, 2009 in Sacramento, the representatives of the following California Sabhas unanimously resolved to strongly condemn this gruesome crime and murderous attack on the lives of these globally known spiritual leaders. They dedicated their entire life for spreading the noble teachings of our Gurus as enshrined in the holy pages of Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
1. Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha Pittsburg. 2. Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha Sacramento. 3. Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha Bay Area 4. Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha Fresno. 5 Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha Yuba City. 6. Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha Selma.
Very generous commitments for financial help were also made on behalf of the above organizations to provide every possible help and relief to the families of the wounded members of the temple in Vienna.
Other organizations associated with the Dalit community in the USA also condemn this extreme act of violence.
1. International Organization Dr. Ambedkar, USA, 2. Bhagwan Balmik Sabha, Yuba City., 3. International Bahujan Samaj Party California, 4 Ambedkar Times, & 5 . International BAMCEF, California .
This despicable and dastardly act on the part of these perpetrators, under the guise of baptized Sikhs, cannot be an isolated act of a small group but a result of a planned and deeply rooted conspiracy of Sikh extremists. The crime they committed making very prominent spiritual leaders and innocent lives the target of their hatred and fanaticism go against the very basic philosophy and vision of Guru Granth Sahib and all norms of a civilized society.
We forcefully and vehemently resolve, urge and demand that the perpetrators be prosecuted and brought to justice to the fullest extent of the law. We also urge that a high powered commission of enquiry be appointed by the Government of India, in cooperation with appropriate authorities in Austria, to find the terrorist sources responsible for the planning and execution of this brutal and savage act at the Gurudwara in Vienna, Austria. We also seek help and all possible protections from the US Government for the safety of all temples run under the name of Shri Guru Ravidass Ji to avoid any similar occurrences in the future.
The death of Sant Rama Nand Ji, who was a revered house-hold name all over the world, is a terrible blow and an irreplaceable loss to the entire community. History will remember him with respect and dignity as a martyr for his sustained and selfless efforts as a religious leader who sacrificed his life for the noble cause of disseminating the teachings of Guru Granth Sahib Ji all over the world. The dedicated services rendered by Dera Sachkhand Ballan with the pivotal role played by Sant Ramanand Ji in the construction, establishment and running of a magnificent shrine at the birth place of Guru Ravidass Ji at Kashi ( Varanasi) can never be forgotten. He will be deeply missed for his contributions to society.
We offer our heartfelt condolences to the worship center at Dera Sachkhand Ballan and the millions of followers of Sahib Shri Guru Ravidass Ji all over the world for this irreparable loss to the entire community. We pray to Almighty God for peace and tranquility of the departed soul. We also wish and pray for full recovery and good health of Sant Niranjan Dass Ji and otherinnocent members of the community wounded in this brutal act.
Sincerely,

Press Release
Southall- The followers of Bharat Ratana Dr. Baba Sahib Ambedkar, Bhagwan Valmik Ji, Sri Guru Ravidass Ji, Buddhist organisations of UK and supporters of British Wing of Bahujan Samaj Party, met at Southall Dr. Ambedkar Centre, on Sunday, 31 May 2009 . The meeting started with two minutes salience as a matter of respect to late Sant Rama Nand Ji. Chief guest Mrs. Kamlesh Ahir of Vancouver , Canada expressed her grief on the murder of Sant Rama Nand Ji and grievously wounding of Sant Niranjan Dass and others. She said that the attack is not just on saints of one Dera but it is a challenge to the whole Dalit movement which is struggling to live the life with dignity. The saints of Dera Sach Khand have provided a glimpse of hope and identity to the community in Punjab which has become an eye sore to the so called upper caste. She stated in clear terms that time has come to replace Sri Guru Granth Saheb with other book, picture or even an idol of Sri Guru Ravidass Ji in the Guru Ravidass Temples where they are able to make their own code of conduct (Maryada). She asked the people how long we will continue to imitate and preach Sikhism on our own expenses and live under the shadow of Sikhism? If we are not careful now, we will have similar attacks.
Mr. Raj Kumar from Toronto , Canada stressed that in free and democratic society, everyone has right to adapt and practice the religion of one’s choice. The attack on these saints who are an embodiment of love and peace is an attack on democracy and violation of basic human rights. Mr. Amar Daroch from Bedford suggested that all Dalits must observe 24 th May as Martyrdom Day as a mark of respect not only to Sri 108 Sant Rama Nand Ji of Dera Sach Khand, Ballan but also the martyrs in the Dalit struggle. Mr. Satpal Muman from Caste Watch UK requested people to write to their MPs to include caste into the Single Equality Bill which is being discussed in the parliament.
Mr. Deesh Gera, Gurpreet Bansi, M.S.Bahal, Gurpal Gill, Sinna mani, former Mayor, gautam Chakravarti, Gurdial Banger and others also expressed their views.
In the meeting, the following resolution was passed.
We wholeheartedly condemn the murder of Sri 108 Sant Rama Nand Ji, critically injuring Sri 108 Sant Niranjan Dass Ji and other followers of Dera Sach Khand, Ballan (Jalandhar) on 24 May 2009 at Vienna in Austria ( Europe ). This cowardly terrorist attack on innocent people in a religious place was unprovoked and without any warning. It was a direct attack on democracy and peoples’ inalienable right to worship.
This incident of terror attack in a foreign land erupted in frayed emotions all over the world and particularly in Panjab which culminated in widespread anguish and resentment in the minds of the followers of Dera Sach Khand, Ballan, resulting in extensive destruction of property and loss of life. We urge the Panjab and Central Governments to release all those arrested unconditionally, compensate suitably those who suffered loss of life and property and provide free medical aid to the injured.

www.ambedkartimes.com is deeply shocked to hear that the great preacher, Sant Rama Nand Ji of Dera Sant Sarwan Dass SachKhand Ballan (Jalandhar, Punjab , India ) is no more. Sant Niranjan Dass Ji (Head of the Dera Sant Sarwan Dass SachKhand Ballan, Jalandhar, Punjab, India) and Sant Rama Nand Ji (Assistant of Sant Niranjan Dass Ji) were attacked with knives and guns by some disgruntled elements at Shri Guru Ravidass Temple in Vienna ( Austria ) on May 24th, 2009 where Sant Rama Nand Ji succumed to his injuries in the hospital in Vienna and Sant Naranjan Dass Ji is now recuperating finely over there (see photographs taken in the hospital showing him in better conditions).
The Ambedkartimes strongly condemn this dastardly act and appeals to the followers of the Dera Sachkand Ballan and to public in general in Punjab in other regions of India as well as abroad to maintain peace, harmony and goodwill. This is in the true spirit of the celestial bani of Shri Guru Ravidass Ji Maharaj.
The Ambedkartimes pays tribute to Sant Rama Nand Ji and prays for Sant Niranjan Dass Ji’s speedy recovery.

An Appeal for Unity and Harmony
The tragic incident of Vienna on 5-24-09 shook and shocked the entire Sikh world. Death and large scale destruction followed in the Punjab, the holy land of the Gurus .Institute for Conflict and Peace studies appeals to the Sikh world and followers of Dera Sach Khand to work together and solve the tangled web of strained relations We also humbly urge all Sikh organizations and traditions to strive with utmost seriousness to maintain peace and harmony and find ways and means to restore peace, goodwill and harmony, with patience, equanimity, tolerance and above all with courage and fortitude.
No justification can be found in the annals of the Sikh history or traditions in general and the glorious Khalsa traditions in particular for such an act of hatred and intolerance. Not only has this tragedy widened the gulf between the mainstream Sikhs and the Rangretas but also has added to the problems of the Sikh organizations that are fighting an international battle for the distinct Sikh identity and their right to wear turbans and Kirpans. Sikh history is replete with glorious deeds performed and Chardikala displayed in the battlefields by the Rangretas. They alone have been bestowed with the honorable title of –Rangreta guru ka beta.
Philosophical differences are natural, but to try to impose solutions by use of force without having exhausted all other peaceful means has neither moral nor ethical justification in the glorious traditions of Sikhism. It has been an age old tradition of Sikhism to solve differences through mutual discussion and dialogue; respect and tolerance. Guru Nanak’s dialogue with the yogis is a testimony to the fact that Sikhism starts with dialogue and discussion and in the end finds the right solution through mutual discussion and respect. A true Sikh always tries to win hearts and minds of the opponents through love and goodwill. As per Sikh traditions all such differences can be resolved under the supreme spiritual authority of Siri Akal Takhat Sahib only. No one organization or a tradition has an authority or a mandate to impose resolutions upon others through violence or vicious misuse of power.
We humbly but passionately urge all Sikh traditions and organizations to maintain peace and harmony and do their utmost to find ways and means to extricate ourselves from the deadly clutches of hatred and intolerance and also urge an inquiry to find out the cause and the culprits responsible for the tragedy and consequent loss of innocent lives and property. If we do not act now it might be too late and death and destruction that has taken place may return with a vengeance.

American Sikh Leaders Condemn Violence in Vienna
Sikh leaders and Diaspora across world have condemned the violence in Vienna and in Punjab . |
Talking from San Francisco , Dr. Pritpal Singh, the convener of the American Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee (AGPC), said: “Violence has never been a solution of any problem. If there are any differences, they should be solved through dialogue.” He said Sikhs were having strong relationship with the “Dalit Samaj” and this brotherhood should continue. He appealed to the Government of Punjab to take appropriate measures to restore peace in the state.
After 9/11 in US, Sikhs living in US and other parts of the world were mistakenly identified with Arabs due to similarity in appearance. Sikhs leaders opine that such acts of violence give a jolt to the peaceful Sikh community worldwide.
Ranjit Singh Masuta, a Sikh leader in Switzerland, said the Government of Punjab should strongly take action against those who have disrupted public life over the last few days.
“We already have been victimizing for mistaken identity of the Sikhs. Such incidents could further damaged the image of the Sikhs living outside India ,” a worried Masuta said. Rajwant Singh, the Chairman of the Sikh Council on Religion and Education (SCORE), in Washington DC , said: “We condemn the violence which took place in Vienna , Austria . He said it need to be categorically condemned by all Sikhs without going into the merits of the issue. No issue requires taking law into your own hand no matter what the provocation is. We are saddened by this terrible tragedy. We appeal everyone to maintain peace and calm at all cost.”armjit Singh Sarna, the President of the Delhi Sikh Management Committee (DSGMC), said there are many other ways to tackle the problems besides violence.
He said that those who follow Sikhism should also know the Sikh code of conduct as evolved by the Akal Takht Sahib, the high temporal seat of the Sikhs. He appeals to the people of Punjab to maintain the peace that has comes after long time.
Alleging that the Government of Punjab has failed to restore peace in Punjab , he said a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry should be conducted against the Punjab Government..xpressing concern over the present Sikh issue, Ragubir Singh, a Sikh leader from France said that such incidents undoubtedly cause a major setback to Sikh interests at the international level.
He said that we already have been working hard day and night to convey the European Government about the peace loving Sikh community. He said that we must keep larger interest of the community when we confront with various differences within the community.t is pertinent to mention that in France and in other European countries Sikhs have been facing problem like wearing Turban and their other religious symbols.
Meanwhile, the Jathedar Akal Takht, Gyani Gurbachan Singh, has expressed sympathy and solidarity with the victims of Vienna incident and urged their followers in Punjab to maintain peace and tranquility.
