3RD ANNUAL SHRI GURU RAVIDASS JI NAGAR KIRTAN PARADE

Last Saturday, over 7,000 people participated in the 3rd Annual Shri Guru Ravidass Ji Nagar Kirtan Parade in Burnaby. After the long weekend was kicked off by a windy storm, some believe that it must have been divine intervention to witness a glorious sunny day for the Nagar Kirtan parade. The largest Nagar Kirtan parade in Burnaby’s history was marshalled by nine individuals carrying nine special symbolic flags which included: Canada, India, BC, Burnaby and five honouring Shri Guru Ravidass Ji.
The Nagar Kirtan parade of followers and bystanders was a visual delight of traditional Indian attire with ladies glittering in bright colours marking the joyous occasion. The atmosphere was highlighted with smiling faces; float riders waving, loud broadcasts, singing of holy hymns, and welcoming glances to people from all communities. “Our Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha (Vancouver) Management Committee took it as a personal mission to make this the biggest and best Nagar Kirtan Parade in our temple’s history. Being the first ever Canadian born president in my temple’s history; it warmed my heart to see all communities join us and I hope we can see thousands of more people come out in years to come to support this festive occasion,” says Micheal Ghirra, President, Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha (Vancouver).

No matter where you come from, what religion you practice or what you believe in, there is something amazing about a Nagar Kirtan parade. Participants were treated to a sumptuous vegetarian feast which was welcomed by all in the community with open arms. Usually an event of this magnitude would draw a lot of litter, but not in this case. Burnaby city officials believe this was one of the cleanliest parades in the City of Burnaby’s history. “Thanks to all the participants, organizers and Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha (Vancouver) Management Committee who made this annual event a great success; all of our hard work and dedication paid off when we were able to see the thousands of smiling faces in the crowd,” says Micheal Ghirra, President, Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha (Vancouver).

Special thanks to all the politicians and local dignitaries who walked with the Nagar Kirtan procession. The weekend of events Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha (Vancouver) concluded with a bhog ceremony that was attended by over 2000 people at the akhand path on Sunday. Record crowds are expected in Vancouver and Surrey for their Nagar Kirtans coming up in the next few weeks.

STATEMENT “E” [f1] NOTE BY Dr. B. R. AMBEDKAR TO THE INDIAN FRANCHISE COMMITTEE (LOTHIAN COMMITTEE) ON THE DEPRESSED CLASSES SUBMITTED ON 1st MAY 1932

III. Depressed Classes in the Punjab

11. In connection with the population figure for the depressed classes given in the census of 1931 I wish to draw attention to two facts:

(1) The population of those who caused pollution by touch was according to the census of 1911, 2-8 millions while in the census of 1931 the population of untouchables is given as amounting to 1.3 millions.

(2) The census of 1911 gives a list of 23 castes which are deemed to cause pollution by touch. The census of 1931 mentions only castes as forming the untouchable population in the Punjab. 12. Why the total population of the untouchables and the list of castes included in that category should have shrunk so much between 1911 and 1931 l am not able to ascertain. It is however necessary to state that among the untouchables of Punjab there has been going on for some years past a strong movement called the Ad-Dharm movement the object of which is to separate from the Hindu fold and form themselves into a distinct community under the new name of Ad-Dharmis. Such has been the strength of the movement that the untouchables decided to return themselves as Ad-Dharmis instead of Hindus in the census of 1931, and the Government gave recognition to this feeling and allowed the Census Superintendent of Punjab to open a new category of Ad-Dharmis.This led in some parts of the Punjab to riots between the Hindus and the untouchables. As a result the untouchables in some parts returned themselves simply as Ad-Dharmis without mentioning their respective castes, and in other parts where they were prevented from doing so returned themselves as Hindus under their caste names. I am mentioning these facts to show that the difficulties created in the enumeration of the untouchables and which are admitted by the Government of Punjab may be responsible for this shrinkage in the number and list of untouchables in the Punjab. The matter therefore requires to be carefully looked into.:

ON AD DHARM DAY JUNE 11-12

Ad Dharm movement, the glorious Dalit movement that not only envisaged an egalitarian social set-up but also struggled hard for the same, was founded formely on June 11-12, 1926 in village Muggowal near Mahilpur (Hoshiarpur) under the dynamic leadership of Babu Mangoo Ram, a famous Gadhrite. Sarva-shri Basant Rai, Thakur Dass and Shudranand were the equally powerful other lieutenants of the Ad Dharm movement. However, when it comes to the brass stack, it was Babu Mangoo Ram who emerged as the leading star of the movement.

Ad Dharm is a name of the indigenous religion of the Dalits of the region who are the natives of this land ( India ). The invading Aryans subjugated them and established their rule over the natives. They see to it that the culture and religion of the natives had to be wiped out fully so that they could not stage a revolt. Mangoo Ram thought it appropriate to relocate the lost native religion in order to re-establish sovereign Dalit Raj once again. He named his movement deliberately after the name of the religion of the natives: Ad Dharm. Thus Ad Dharm is both 'Religion' as well as 'Movement'.

Babu Mangoo Ram Muggowalia made concerted efforts in the direction of laying solid ground for the revival of Ad Dharm in Punjab . He was of the opinion that if the ex-untouchables have to live a dignified life they had to revive their gurus, religious scriptures, festivals and religious places as well. He approached Sant Sarwan Dass Ji Maharaj at Dera Sachkhand Ballan for concretizing the Bani of Guru Ravidass Ji Maharaj and the proliferation of his mission. Ad Prakash, a holy Granth containing the Bani of Guru Ravidass and other Dalit Gurus was prepared. Mangoo Ram Muggowalia expressed his will among close circle that his last rites should be performed amidst the chanting of the holy Bani of Ad Parkash.

In the Ad Dharm Mandal approach, it is clearly mentioned that every Ad Dharmi should live his/her life according to the tenets of Ad Dharm and should not believe in any other religion. He said our Gurus are Guru Nam Dev, Guru Ravidass, Guru Kabir, Guru Valmiki and all other Dalits saints. Thus Ad Dharm movement has very early shown the vision for the establishment of a separate Dalit identity based on distinct Dalit native religion: Ad Dharm.

IN THE MEMORIES OF SANT RAMA NAND JI,WHO WAS ASSASINATED IN VIENNA AUSTRIA ON 24 OF MAY 2009.

Sant Rama Nand Ji was visiting Vienna Austria for the spreading massage of Guru Ravidass Ji.Sant also visited Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha Vancouver in the past . He had great respect in the Ravidassia community in Canada. We ( Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha Vancouver ) condemn this act of terrorism on humanity.

Sant Rama Nand, 57, who headed Dera Sach Khand Ballan near Jalandhar, succumbed to his injuries Monday in a hospital after he was attacked by a group of knife-wielding Sikhs inside Guru Ravidass Sabha in Vienna.

The two preachers were in Vienna to participate in annual celebrations of Ravidassia sect founder and 14th century mystic saint Guru Ravidass.

The sect's top leader, Sant Niranjan Dass, 68, and many others were also injured in the attack.

Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha Vancouver will observe this day (may 24 ) as martyr’s day to pay respect to this sant.

	Ad-Dharm - Navayana Buddhism

What type of presence does Ad-Dharm have in America I am very interested in it, as I find the work of both Ravidas and Kabir to be inspiring. I also have great respect for Dr. Ambedkar's perspective on Buddhism. It is refreshing. How compatible is Ad-Dharm with Navayana Buddhism? I do think Ad-Dharm and Navayana Buddhism have a particularly refreshing quality, and being tied to the Dalit Culture, they represent the heart of India . I live in California , and we have plenty of Hinduism but virtually no liberating Dalit Spirituality which actively engages the world for positive change. What is in the southern California area ?

Today is a very sad day for Ad Dharmi Qaum, because we lost our great warrior Sahib Baba Mangu Ram Mugowalia Jee founder of the Ad-Dharm Movement in Punjab . I, really and heartily, pay my homage in the feet of Great Ghadri Baba Mangu Ram Mugowalia Jee's 29th death anniversary day and I would request to all those who are real lover of Ad Dharm, come out from any arrogant, cruel discriminator and brute-slaughters of our ancestors.

Dalits should follow the teachings of Baba Mangu Ram Mugowalia Jee and try to apply his indicated Ad Parkash Granth, which is still unseen by Ad-Dharmi Samaj (See and trust and follow Ad-Dharm Mandal's report). It is a very shame for us if we don’t follow teachings of Baba Mangu Ram Mugowalia Jee and still not applied.

I think this will be a real tribute to Baba Sahib Ambedkar and Baba sahib Mangu Ram Mugowalia Jee, if we try to understand well and follow his effective teaching to the Ad-Dharmi Qaum. In the last, I congratulate to Mr. Prem Kumar Chumber Jee editor of Ambedkartimes.com who is spreading our great masters's teachings and connecting our Dalits’s views from far counteries which is really admirable for Dalits to awake.

Many congratulations and best wishes to launch this missionary newspaper under the name of our emancipator and messiah Dr. B. R. Ambedkar who said a great man is different from an eminent one in that he is ready to be the servant of the society.

"Whatever I have done, I have been able to do after passing through crushing miseries and endless struggle all my life and fighting with my opponents. With great difficulty I have brought this caravan where it is seen today. Let the caravan march on despite the hurdles that may come in its way. If my lieutenants are not able to take the caravan ahead they should leave it there, but in no circumstances should they allow the caravan to go back. This is the message to my people."

S. Gian Singh Sandhu IAS passed away at Chandigarh who belonged to village Allahabad (Hoshiarpur). He released the Punjabi version of "Adi-Dharam Mandal Report 1931 AD" on 12th June, 2000, written by Ghaddri Baba Mangu Ram Muggowalia founder of Ad Dharm Mandal Punjab and translated by Mr. C. L. Chumber Ex Tehsil Welfare Officer & chief editor of monthly journal "Kaumi Udarian" Punjabi/Hindi/English.

S. Gian Singh Sandhu IAS former Deputy Commisioner, Kapurthala expired on 3rd March, 2009. He was born on 1st May, 1936 at village Gilotra wali Tehsil Channot district Jhang (now in Pakistan). S. Ujagar Singh Sandhu and Bibi Karam Kaur were his parents .He did his primary education from A.S. High School, Mukerian district Hoshiarpur and higher study in DAV College , Hoshiarpur .He was selected PCS and promoted to IAS . He was PCS ( C ) / SDM at Garhshankar ( Hoshiarpur ), Anandpur Saheb ( Ropar ),Jagraon ( Ludhiana ) and Mansa ( Bathinda ) .He was also Commissioner , Municipal Corporation , Amritsar and Joint Secretary , Education , Punjab .He retired as Deputy Commissioner , Kapurthala on 30 May 1994.

He was a multi facet personality .He was a good writer and wrote about one dozen books in Punjabi .He wrote songs which were recorded in the voice of the prominent singers of Punjab .He also performed presentations as a folk singer in the Paryag Sangit Akademy, Allahabad ( U.P. ) and DAV College , Hoshiarpur ( Punjab ) .He was the chief guest of the Adi-Dharam Mandal Platinum Jubilee function celebrated at the Desh Bhagat Yaadgar Hall, Jalandhar City on 12th June , 2000 organised by myself .He released the Punjabi version of "Adi-Dharam Mandal Report 1931 AD" on 12th June, 2000, written by Ghaddri Baba Mangu Ram Muggowalia founder of Ad Dharm Mandal Punjab and translated by myself .

We share grief with his wife Mrs. Amarjit Kaur , his son Mr. Karamvir Singh Sahota ( Canada ) and his family , his daughter Mrs. Punit Kaur and his husband Mr. Iqbalprit Singh Sahota IPS , IG , Punjab police boarder range , Amritsar , his daughter Mrs. Navnit Kaur and his husband Mr. Bhupinder Singh PCS , regional transport authority and deputy director , Local self government , Ferozepur and his friends , admirers and remaining relatives.

Distinguished guests congratulated the sangat on this suspicious day and appreciated guru ghar's management committee for organizing such great celebrations of a great saint who acknowledged the value of democracy several centuries back and spread his message of "Begampura Sehar Ko Nau" and " Aisa Chahoon Raaj Mein" shabads.

Various speakers also shared their learnings about the teachings and life of Guru Ravidass and congratulated sangat >Speakers included Kashmir Singh, Ajay Duggal, Raj Kumar, Talwinder Singh. Most of the local organizations participated in the program along with Indian Buddhist Society Toronto, Canada.

Gurughar was packed with sangat and for the success of great celebrations; the credit goes to the sangat who showed such devotion on this auspicious day to pay homage to their beloved guru, saint and a great social reformer who fought against social injustice. Management committee also did a great job. Mr. Daulat Birdi is commendable to arrange all MPs and other special guests.

SHRI GURU RAVIDASS SABHA PITTSBURG (CALIFORNIA), CELEBRATED THE 632 ND BIRTHDAY ANNIVERSARY OF SATGURU RAVIDASS MAHARAJ JI

ShRI GURU RAVIDASS SABHA CA, PITTSBURG celebrated the 632 nd Birthday Anniversary of Satguru Ravidass Maharaj Ji on Sunday, February 15, 2009 with religious fervor and gaiety at the temple. Although the weather was not very good but that could not refrain the sangat from coming to the Guru Ghar to seek the Guru's blessing. Sangat in thousands had gathered to seek the blessings of Guru Ji and attended a three day long Prayers ad Kirtan Diwan ceremonies to honor and pay their tributes to this Great Saint who inspired people by his spiritual leadership and practice to abolish manmade discriminations based on caste, color and creed. While some sangat were listening to the Gurbani and religios songs/dhadi, some were busy doing the Sewa for the Langar. " Sewa nu milda mewa. kar ke koi vekh lo". It was really amazing to see the zeal in the sangat doing the sewa. While some were busy making sabzi and dals, others were busy making the chapaties and Jalebies.

Prominent Kirtankar Bhai Harblas Singh, Bibi Surjit Kaur, Dhadi Jatha of Bhai Kuldip Singh, Bhai Baldev Singh, Religious songs by Santokh Jhingran , Sewak Dass, Bibi Kamaljit Bhatia and Bibi Satnam Kaur Recited the Kirtan Diwan. Distinguished Speakers and community leaders Sukhraj Chpora, Dr. Harmesh, Kewal Singh, Des Raj Banger, Vinod Chumber, Satnam Basra, Guru and Satnam Singh Chahal Chief Editor Punjab News spoke on the life and teachings of Satguru Ravidass Ji and urged the people to follow the teachings of this great revolutionary saint of India .

General Secretary Kamal Dev Pall, Sucha Singh Raipur highlighted the teachings of this great guru who gave his simple message of universal love, peace and social justice for all. Shri Guru Ravidass Ji was born in the 14th century at Kanshi (Vanaras), Uttar Pradesh in India , in a humble family of Baba Santokh Dass ji being as father and Mata Kalsa Devi Ji as mother. Since early childhood, Guru Ravidassji was very much inclined to spirituality. AT the the time of Guru Ravidass Ji social system and religious pattern of the society was very distressing, the world was suffering from manmade discriminations based on caste, color, creed and fanaticism. Guru Ji teachings led to mass awakening and brought a new era of hope, strength and freedom to the downtrodden and depressed classes of Indian Society. He dreamt of “BEGAMPURA” where worries anguish and worldly cares would not torment any one. The 41 hymns of Shri Guru Ravidass ji are included in the Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

Influenced by Guru Ravidass's teachings, the Maharaja and the Rani of Chittor became disciples of Guru Ravidass. The famous saint poetess, Mirabai, also became a disciple of Guru Ravidass.
Guru Ji message came out of His heart and won the hearts of the people of his time. Satguru Ravidass Ji was a great religious and social reformer dedicated his whole life for the welfare of the humanity. Our true tribute to Satguru Ravidass is to adopt and follow his sacred philosophy, preaching and make them a part of our lives. The entire Sangat was congratulated for their generous donations and all Sri Guru Ravidass Sabhas of the California for their cooperation to make the Birth Anniversary celebration of Guru Ravidass Ji a huge success. President Som Bhatia, and Chairman Satpaul Surila thanked the entire Sangat for their participation in this program and also to the dedicated sewadars, Gurnam Singh from Texas, Dharam Pal Chonkria, Jaila Jaggi, Bibi Asha Rani, Abhishek, Ajay Kataria, Asa Ram Kalsi, Dalwinder Paul, George Bhatia, Naresh Sweet maker, Santokh Ralh, Jarnail ,Yashpal Dugh, Salinder Bhatia, Bakhso Jaggi, Amar Kaur, Gian Kaur, Balihar Kaur, Ram Ralh and many more who volunteered their skills and creativity to prepare langer and decorate the Guru Ghar. Chumber said at this occasion that Adi Mahaguru Ravidass was not a casteist as he proclaimed " Namdev , Kabir , Tarlochan , Sadhna , Sain tarey " and " kahe re man Valmikeh dekh , kis jat te kis uttam pad paaeyo " . These socio-religious Adi Mahagurus were not Adi Mahaguru Ravidass` co-caste fellows! He projected them as they all were among the Indian aboriginals and theirs teachings were based on equality, quality, equity, liberty, fraternity and justice for all! Adi Mahaguru Ravidass proclaimed “Begampura Shahar Ka Nao " an ideal state and the issues in this Shabad are fully adopted by the present constitution drafted by the constituent assembly under the chairmanship of Baba Saheb Ambedkar who also dedicated one book to Guru Ji including Adi Mahagurus Chokha Mela and Nand Nar ! Guru Ji proclaimed that untouchables’s sufferings are due to the lost of their political power," Achhut Raj Bicharat Dukh Paayeo.”

Mr. Chumber continued that Adi-Dharam’s founder Adi Mahababa Mangu Ram Muggowalia ( 1886-1980 ad ) wrote " Adi Dharam Mandal report 1931 " in which he wrote that Maharishi Valmiki , Guru Namdev , guru Ravidass and Guru Kabir are our Adi-Dharam’s Gurus. He wrote “Adi-Parkash Asankhdeep Granth " is our religious scripture. Third, “Soham " is our religious word to recite. Mata Dalvir Kaur Ji , Gaddi-Nashin ( head ) , Dera Satguru Swami Ishwar Dass Ji Maharaj , Anand Garh , said ," the " Sohang " is our real and original legitimate religious " word " as Mr. Chumber elaborated it. We must stand on it firmly and our Dera published “the Adi Parkash Granth for Adi-Dharmi.!” Mr. Chanan Ram Dhanda said, " we are proud of Baba Muggowalia who was born just 5 kilometers away from us and started Guru Ji`s religious procession first ever in the universe in 1928 ad at Jalandhar city when Guru Ji `s Kashi forget him . The manuwadis attacked on procession at jaggu chowk. Second day, the Adi Dharamis and Muslims procession and beaten the manuwadis. They fled away with open shops!

Ad Dharm movement in Punjab is the pioneer Dalit movement of North India. Founded by Babu Mangoo Ram Mugowalia, this movement made public its ideology and plan-of-action for the empowerment of the downtrodden on June 11-12, 1926, at its first mammoth conference at village Mugowal of District Hoshiarpur ( Punjab). It laid stress on distinct Dalit identity independent of Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims and Christians. To achieve that the Ad Dharm movement aimed at relocating the indigenous religion of Dalits and to get it registered as their official religion in the state. In no time this historic movement became a Dalit mass struggle for their separate Dalit identity (for a detailed analysis see: Mark Juergensmeyer. 1988. Religious Rebels in the Punjab; and Ronki Ram. 2004. Untouchability, Dalit Consciousness, and the Ad Dharm Movement in Punjab", Contributions to Indian Sociology, Vol. 38, No. 3, September-December 2004).

With the active supports of the all sections of the community, the Ad Dharm movement succeeded in getting Ad Dharm religion registered for the Census in 1931. At that time about five lakhs members of the community got them recorded as Ad Dharmi. It was perhaps for the first time in the neglected/unrecorded history of the Dalits in India that Scheduled Castes in Punjab declared themselves as belonging to an indigenous non-Aryan religion totally different from that of all the mainstream religions of the region. Not only that, the movement even contested the first provincial election of 1937 and returned the community candidates from 7 out of 8 reserved constituencies in Punjab. That was also the first great success of the Dalits in Punjab towards their march to gain political power: the proverbial Master Key.

This is in fact what the Dalits of Punjab should have continued with if they were willing to come into power on their own in the state where they are in largest numbers in comparison to rest of the entire country. Sahib Kanshi Ram did his level best to pick up the thread from where Babu Mangoo Ram Mugowalia had left. But that bore fruits in UP and Punjab is yet to replicate the same. Doing that would be a true tribute to Babu Mangoo Ram Mugowalia and Sahib Kanshi Ram Ji and to the Historic Ad Dharm movement in Punjab.
