From the desk of Iqbal S. Badwalz, CPA

PRESIDENT,
INDUS VALLEY
AMERICAN CHAMBER
OF COMMERCE
I am very pleased to announce that the California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones today announced the appointments to the California Organized Investment Network (COIN) Advisory Board.
In announcing the new appointments, Mr. Jones introduced Mr. Sukh Singh, General Secretary of the Indus Valley American Chamber of Commerce, as an active community leader, outreaching to collaborate with other community groups, including serving as President of the Indo Canadian Cultural Association. He has been recognized by several government entities for his decades of public service. Mr. Singh holds an MA in Political Science and an MPE from Ottawa University.
We applaud Mr. Dave Jones's decision to recognize the friendly Indian community and open the doors for more participative service. Mr. Jones explained, that the COIN guides insurer capital into socially responsible, environmentally sustainable and community financial investments. COIN’s team of investment officers lead two funds unlike any other in the nation: the Qualified Investment Platform and the CDFI Tax Credit program. COIN’s Qualified Investment Platform screens investment deals across asset classes for their risk, rates of return and provision of tangible benefits to California’s undercapitalized communities and/or environment. From 1996 through 2008, insurers invested more than $19 billion through COIN’s Qualified Investment Platform. COIN’s Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) Tax Credit Program provides a 20 percent State tax credit on a $50,000 minimum investment, loan or deposit into a COIN-certified CDFI for 60 months. Each year, $2 million in tax credits are available on a total of $10 million of invested capital. To date, $125 million in CDFI deposits have generated $25 million in State tax credits.
“The COIN program has proven to be a highly successful effort in providing funding for important projects in underserved communities throughout the state, and I am confident our new board members are up to the task of furthering the success of this initiative,” said Commissioner Jones. “Without question, their work on the COIN Advisory Board will be especially important given these difficult economic times.”
We wish the COIN program every success.

My final words of advice to you are
Educate, Agitate and Organize;
have faith in
yourself. With justice on our side I do not see
how we can loose our battle. The battle to me
is a matter of joy. The battle is in the fullest
sense spiritual. There is nothing material or
social in it. For ours is a battle not for wealth
or for power. It is battle for freedom. It is the
battle of reclamation of human personality?

"THIRD BARSI" OF COMMISSIONER LAHORI RAM
May 10, 1944 – January 11, 2009

"I have only slipped away into the next room, I am I and you are you. Whatever we were to each other, that we still are. Call me by my old
familiar name. Speak to me in the easy way which you always used. Play, smile, think of me. All is well."? ~ Henry Scott Holland

It is with great pride and honor that the Ram Family invites all members of the community to commemorate the life and legacy of a paragon of the ideal human being. Commissioner Lahori Ram was the best at his worst and humble at his best. He served as the ultimate role model as a devoted husband, father, grandfather and as a member of society. He was a friend and confidant to all but an enemy to none. He left his footprints in the sand and we shall follow in those footprints. It is our duty to move forward in the path that he set and carry on the message that he firmly believed in: “United we stand and divided we fall.”

Please join the Ram family in a religious service honoring the third memorial ceremony of this great departed soul.

"SECOND BARSI" OF COMMISSIONER LAHORI RAM
May 10, 1944 – January 11, 2009

"I have only slipped away into the next room, I am I and you are you. Whatever we were to each other, that we still are. Call me by my old familiar name.

It is said that even God needs good people in His Company but we shall always miss your presence. Nevertheless, your soul will remain with us forever. We will always love you dearly. May God bless your soul and give us the strength to move on. Please join the Ram family in a religious service honoring the second memorial ceremony of this great departed soul.

Program: •Commence Prayer Ceremony (Arambh Akhand Path Sahib): Friday January 21, 2011 at 11:00 am. • Conclusion of Prayer -- Main Service (Bhog): Sunday January 23, 2011 10:00 am to 3:00 pm • Venue: Shri Guru Ravidass Temple (Phone: 925- 439-2655) 2150 Crestview Drive, Pittsburg, CA 94565 For additional information, please call: : Jack Ram (650) 455-9026, Paul Ram (650) 296-4208

Ambedkar especially in Punjab and in whole India in general. He was a renowned scholar of Urdu and Hindi as well. He wrote extensively in Hindi too.

Shri Bhagwan Das was the founder member of the World Conference on Religion and Peace (India Chapter) with its headquarters in New York and Geneva. He was also the Director, Asian Centre for Human Rights; member of the Governing Board and Executive Committee of Asian Conference on Religion and Peace having its headquarters at Tokyo; and President of the Dalit Solidarity Programme. Shri Bhagwan Das was very dear to all of us. I personally learnt a lot from close interaction with him. He was a great Ambedkarite who had the honour to know and meet Baba Sahib Dr. B.R. Ambedkar in person. He was the first true Ambedkarite who published the speeches of Dr. Ambedkar in the late 1960s from Bheem Patrika in Jalandhar. In teaming up with another legendry Ambedkarite from Punjab, Shri L.R. Balley, Shri Bhagwan Das pioneered the sincere cause of publishing Ambedkar literature in a big way in English as well as vernacular. He devoted his entire life for the cause of the upliftment of the socially excluded sections of the Indian society. His passing away is rally an irreparable loss for all of us never to be filled up. However, he would always be with us through his seminal works on Dalit literature that he had produced over his life-long persistent intellectual efforts and grass-roots activism. I empathise with you, your family and all the fellow Ambedkarites.

May God grant peace to the departed soul.

Dear Editor,

I was shocked to hear the sudden demise of Sh. Bhagwan Dass Ji, Lieutenant of Dr. Ambedkar Mission. He was a great missionary personality who has written dozens of books on the problems of Dalits and Minorities and also raised the same in UNO.

PUNJABI AMERICAN HERITAGE
SOCIETY YUBA CITY CALIFORNIA HONORED

DR. AMRIK SINGH SACRAMENTO
AND
JASWINDER BANGA (Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha Sacramento (California)

Yuba City:- Yuba City occupies a special distinction for Punjabi Community of United States of America. It organizes a largest religious gathering of Punjabi Diaspora outside Punjab every year. About a hundred thousand people converge to celebrate Guru Granth Sahib’s “Gur Gaddi Divas” in the first week of November. Yuba City also enjoys preeminence in the cultural field as the biggest Punjabi Festival is organized annually by Punjabi American Heritage Society. Despite the fact that there are many restrictions for entry, a great number of Punjabis make to the festivities. The main reason of its popularity is that it keeps all norms of Punjabi decency. Organizers never let it deviate into a bad taste. Only those items are presented that promote creative, entertaining and chivalrous aspects of Punjabi culture. Very prominent artists are invited to amuse the audience.

These festivals play a key role in bonding young children with their roots. Competitions are organized to identify talent and creativity in children. This year contests for Miss Punjaban and Mr Punjabi were also introduced. Dr. Jasbir Singh Kang, who is an alumni of Medical College Patiala, is one of the main leaders of the event. The proceedings of this festivals are broadcast both in American and Punjabi media. Maybe this is the only festival to be given so much prominent coverage. Dr. Kang is associated with many activities that promote dialog, mutual understanding and fellow feelings about Punjabis among Americans. He was instrumental in production of many documentary films about Punjabi people in America.

Dr. Kang’s team never fails in recognizing distinguished personalities of the region who have contributed significantly to the community welfare. This year among the prominent persons to be honored are World Wide Promoter Jessie Banga, Director of KVIE television David Hosley, President of Guru Ravidas Sabha Rio Linda Shingara Singh and Professor of Sacramento State University, Dr. Amrik Singh. Jessie Banga was recognized for his positive approach towards community welfare and David Hosley for producing a film “Sikhs in America” for the KVIE network of television.

A Special honor was also accorded to Yuba City’s First Punjabi Mayor Kashmir Singh Gill for creating a favorable history for the community. Along with him many other officials of the Yuba and Sutter County were recognized for their cooperation to the Punjabi community.

Financial
aid to
Late Ram Lal Chumber’s family

Report by Harpreya Chumbar

Ram Lal Chumber passed away quietly in Stockton in March of 2009. He had no immediate family in the U.S.A. to take care of his matters. Our community members heard of this tragedy and decided to take action. Everyone got together to send his body back to India and raised money for his family that depended on him for support.

Here are the pictures taken in India of the money that was donated to the family of Late Ram Lal Chumber. 150,000 Rupees were donated to his parents (Mr. Tara Ram and wife)

and Late Ram Lal's wife Bimla Devi and his daughter Sunita Devi were also given the donated money of Rupees 2, 47,000. The money was raised thanks in part to Satnam Singh Chumber ( Brentwood ), Sukhdev Singh ( Stockton ), Paramjit Bhutta ( Sacramento ), Raja (from Nevada ), Kashmir Singh ( Sacramento ), Kewal Bolina ( Sacramento ), Joginder Chumber ( Sacramento ), Varinder Chumber ( Stockton ), and Vinod Chumber ( Fremont ). We would also like to thank the many countless people who also helped donate their part of the share of money. Without your help, this would not have taken place.

MISS HARPREYA CHUMBER'S
MARVELOUS ACHIEVEMENTS

C. L. Chumber

Mrs. Balvir Kaur Chumbar was honored by Mr. C.L. Chumber, Chief Editor,
at the office of monthly journal "Kaumi Udarian" Jalandhar in Punjab during her last visit to Punjab

I am very happy to read on the www.ambedkartimes.com that our daughter Miss Harpreya Chumber graduated and ranked first out of four hundred students. She won scholarships in past also .Once my wife read a conclusions of some one published in a Punjabi news paper .In the news paper published ," If you wish to know about a religious person then live with him / her . If you wish to know about a teacher then you must meet the students of that teacher. If you wish to know about any parents then you have to meet their children." Miss Harpreya Chumber `s marvelous achievements show that her parents are very education minded and more over they are also staunch feminists .They allowed their daughter equal educational opportunities and environment . I met her mother Mrs. Balvir Kaur Chumber when she visited our home with other relatives last year. She is belonged to village Puran Pur adjacent to the Jalandhar   City and married to Mr. Satnam Chumber r/o village Kultham (Nawan Shahar / SBS Nagar) .They both now live in USA .Mrs. Chumber  is also a graduate but now the whole family is now  the graduate parents ! I hope the students and parents will be inspired from this.

Mr. Satnam Singh Chumber talked to me once on the phone. He is very clear hearted like her wife. Alas! His mother and brother would have alive to feel proud this marvelous achievement. I think that this is the real ' Shardhanjali ' to them!

I am in Pune ( Maharashtra ) with my wife to meet our daughters who are managers in the MNCs. I on the behalf of the entire Adi Dharamis living in India and abroad, and my family members congratulate to the Chumber family, their relatives and friends especially Miss Harpreya .I also thank the  www.ambedkartimes.com for highlighting this rare achievement .

A Tribute to late Babu Lahori Ram

By O. P. BALLEY
Co-founder -Sri Guru Ravidass Sabha Pittsburg (California)

Bhog in Memory of the Late Babu Lahori Ram at 11:00 on Sunday January 25, 2009
at Shri Guru Ravidass Temple, 2150 Crestview Drive Pittsburg, CA 9456

The sudden and untimely passing away of Babu Lahori Ram Ji on January 11, 2009 during a trip to Vancouver, Canada left the entire Indian community in a state of stunning shock. A large gathering of mourners at his funeral services held in San Francisco on January 18, 2009 estimated to be more than a thousand people from US and abroad bears testimony to his popularity as a great community leader. During my long association for more than 32 years in US with Mr. Lahori Ram I had the opportunity to work with him on many important social issues and projects of community interest.

He was a man of strong spiritual, social and political beliefs which he vouched with passion, firmness and determination. At the same time he was always very resilient, soft and responsive to those in need. He provided inspiration and encouragement to every body that came in contact with him. During a short span of his life Mr. Lahori Ram, besides his personal accomplishments as a successful business man, providing the best education to his children, he lifted the image and stature of the Indian community as well.

He will be remembered with respect and dignity for his sustained and selfless efforts as a co-founder of Sri Guru Ravidass Temple in Pittsburg California. He was gifted with abundant resourcefulness and undaunted courage to meet any challenge in the way of his endeavors which also earned him awards of honor and distinction. He always encouraged the members of the Indian community in US to involve more and more to their full potential in the mainstream of American life to become productive citizens of this great country. He will be deeply missed for his contributions to society for many, many years to come.

I offer my heartfelt condolences on this irreparable and irreplaceable loss to the bereaved family and the community at large with prayers to Almighty God to bestow peace and tranquility upon the departed soul.

THE FIRST RAVDASSIA CANDIDATE
TO STAND FOR GENERAL ELECTION

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

 Jai Sat Guru Ravidass Ji

We are writing this letter on behalf of Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha Ontario , the only Ravidassia organization in Ontario . This letter is to confirm and affirm our wholehearted support to Mr. Jerry Bance as a PC Candidate from Scarborough Rouge River constituency . Mr. Bance (who we friendly address as Jagiri) , it must not be forgotten by our community, was one of the pioneers in Toronto area who started and spearheaded the efforts to open the first Guru Ravidass Temple in Toronto and worked tirelessly towards its growth. Being from Dalit community, Mr. Bance has not only overcome many hardships that we faced in India (and many times here also), but has reached, through his concerted efforts and community services to a level, where he has broken an important barrier in Canada of being the first Ravidassia candidate to stand for general elections.

While many may not consent with our choice of using word Dalit to address an individual who is established in society, but it must be made known to sceptics that his rise to the current status has been through a path of hardships and struggle, a path that is strewn with risks, a path that many others tried to follow and faltered. So his initiative and motives are not only noble but also commendable. Being from a socially and financially disadvantaged community like all of us, it is not only a matter of pride for our community but also serves as an encouragement to our community youth to follow in his steps.

We sincerely hope that Mr. Bance would identify himself and come forth strongly as a RAVIDASSIAN to fight the forces of discrimination and injustice and serve as a role model for others.  We strongly encourage everybody on behalf of Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha Ontario to contribute towards Mr. Bance’s success in their own manner through donations and/or volunteer support.

Best Regards,

Sunil Raju (General Secretary on behalf of Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha Ontario, Cnada)

Dear Community,

I would like to introduce to you our very own Jerry Bance.  Once again Mr. Bance is running for a Member of Parliament position for the Scarborough-Rouge River riding. Many of you know him as being an active member of our community- both within the Dr. Ambedkar Mission and Guru Ravidass Sabha.  He has supported every one of our cultural and religious events, and now it is our turn to support him in his efforts to make his riding a better place to live in.

Jerry came to Canada over 30 years ago, since than he has been a distinguishing member of many groups. For 6 years, Mr. Bance was the president of Ravidass Sabha Toronto. During his time there he along with other members bought a building, which is known, to everyone as the Guru Ravidass Temple in Burlington . Not only has he had a vast impact within the Ravidass community but also within the Dr. Ambedkar Mission Toronto, his support will never be forgotten. He was one of the founding members of the mission, and now he supports it with his generous gifts and advice to the members.

Mr. Bance is a successful businessman in the appliance industry. He is always happy to employ members of the community and provide appliance training at no cost to many unemployed men and women. Once elected, Jerry will continue his initiative to support small businesses and families by cutting taxes, tackling crime and investing in Canada .  He wants to make the Scarborough Rouge River a stronger, safer and a better place to live in. Unfortunately, over the years the community has deteriorated due to gang wars and violence. Past elected officials saw these problems, but took little action to rectify them. Jerry believes that on his watch, he will be able to change that. By enforcing new laws to fight crime and by developing tax credits for transit, youth sports, textbooks, tools and apprentice programs, he will make the Scarborough Rough River a great area for youth to grow up in.

Jerry is a well-known personality within the South Asian community here in Toronto as well as all across Canada . He has been apart of our lives in some way or another. And now it is time to give back to Jerry, and support him in his efforts to make Scarborough a better place. The Conservative Party of Canada and Jerry Bance's team could not be successfully without the help of thousands of volunteers across Canada . A strong team of volunteers across Canada will help Mr. Bance win the election for his riding on October 14 th. My request to you is to get active, whether it is supporting him financially or morally, every little help is appreciated. He has given so much to our community and I know that he would be grateful to know that he has two large communities supporting him, the Dr. Ambedkar Mission Toronto and the Guru Ravidass Sabha. Get your children involved.  They can accumulate volunteer hours for school credits. Everyone can benefit from Jerry Bance winning.

If you would like to support Jerry Bance in his initiative please visit his website www.jerrybance.com or you can call him 416.286.5151

Thank you,
Anand Balley
